Car import & export in Denmark — the 2026 numbers
2026-07-10 · vehicles
Every car on a Danish road is in the official Motor Register (DMR). Aggregating all 12.8 million records shows exactly how the Danish car market moves — what gets imported, exported and scrapped. The figures below are live; the full interactive breakdown is on the car import & export dashboard.
Used imports: 1.66 million cars (12.9%)
1,661,006 vehicles on Danish roads were used-imported — first registered abroad, then registration-inspected into Denmark. That is 12.9% of the whole fleet. The brands imported most are Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, BMW and Audi; the single most-imported model is the VW Golf (≈48,000), followed by the VW Passat, VW Polo and Tesla Model 3. Imports skew recent — most are model years 2018–2022.
Exports & scrapping
681,781 cars (5.3%) have been exported out of Denmark and 1,270,154 (9.9%) scrapped. Relative to fleet size, the highest scrap shares are for Chevrolet (21.2%), Peugeot (20.9%) and Fiat (19.5%) — partly a reflection of brand age and desirability.
Electric is now the majority of new cars
The clearest trend of all: battery-electric cars have gone from near 0% of new registrations in 2011 to ~72% in 2026. Tesla has the youngest fleet in Denmark, averaging just 3.6 years.
